Peppermint Path

The birth of this idea was the 7" Go! cutter Drunkard's Path die.

I wanted to try a 10" square on the die and see what I could create with an entire layer cake.

Supplies:
Go! cutter
7" Drunkard's Path Die
(Can also be made with the traditional drunkard's path templates)
Layer Cake Fruitcake by Basic Grey for Moda
For a larger quilt 1/3 yard pieces of 16 total red and white prints will yield a 56" X 70" quilt.
For this project I selected the 8 reds and 8 white prints from the Fruitcake line.
The way I situated them on the die was a single layer of fabric, however, I used a 10" square over each half of the die. This die is very large. It will cut 4 drunkard's path blocks at a time. In order to maximize my fabric I overlapped the 10" squares in the middle of the die by about 1/4".
Roll the fabric through the Go! cutter.
The result is 4 drunkard's path blocks by mixing and pairing the red and white prints evenly.
By alternating the rows starting with red and then white for the next row, it creates a stripe effect.

{16} 10" layer cake squares will yield a 4X4 set of blocks
If you use 1/3 yard of each print you will have an 8 X 10 set of blocks or a 56" X 70" quilt as shown.
I really wanted to have this quilt done for the blog tour.
I haven't been able to sit an sew for about 5 days though!
As soon as I have it pieced I will update the post.

Disclosure: I was not compensated for the blog post or blog tour, nor was I compensated to post about Accuquilt's bundle of joy. I am just happy to share Go! projects with you.

A favorite and a question.

I have been slowly sorting through my magazine stash. I happen to think that this is one of the best quilts on the cover of American Patchwork and Quilting.
It's by Piece O' Cake designs.
I really love it.
I don't know if I will ever make that quilt, but I have many years to decide.
Today was a super fun day - ah well I am kidding.
It was work related. I went to a dental meeting and learned many great things.
I have been offline much more than usual.
I am hoping to create a few projects in the 'unplugged-ish' time.
I mean, I will be online, just cut back A LOT.
My 600th post is coming up very soon.
Could mean a giveaway.
What do you like for a giveaway?
1. handmade item i.e purse or pillow
2. new precuts (Moda from me :))
3.a kit of somesort ( maybe cut on the Go! maybe not)
4. gift certificate from an online store
5. other ....name the "other"
I look forward to your comments.

Easy Halloween Towel Tutorial

I have been on a quest for holiday home decor.
I created a couple of towel designs that I think anyone could have success making.

Today's tutorial will be the Easy Halloween Towel.
Supplies:
1 Black Indo USA kitchen towels {pre-washed}
2/3 yard of Halloween fabric {border style preferred}
I used Halloween Night by Minick and Simpson for Moda sku#14699-12
Basic sewing supplies
Start by measuring your towel.
It will be approximately 28" X 19" {I highly recommend pre-washing}
Using the entire 2/3 yard, start by un-folding the fabric.
Re-fold so that the fabric can be cut "with" the selvage as shown.
Since I am right handed, the selvage is to the left when I cut.

Using a 6" X 24" ruler line up your design repeat.
I wanted equal fabric on either side of the pumpkins.
Make the first cut, flip the fabric around and cut equal distance on the other side.
Your piece will be 6" X 24"

Next, turn under the raw edges of 6" X 24" piece about 1/2".
Press these edges.
This will give you a 'finished' edge.

Here is the fabric pressed and ready to be sewn to the towel.

Lay the fabric strip across the bottom edge of the towel.
I allowed about 2" of black towel to show at the bottom.
Pin your fabric strip in place.
There will be excess on the sides, fold that to the backside carefully and pin.
Top stitch with matching thread about 1/8" around the edge.
Ta Da!

Wool Candy Corn Pincushion....

Candy Corn...
pincushion....
super easy.....

This is a free pattern from Quiltmaker that I happen to come across while I was managing my magazine stash.
Just a bit of wool felt scraps and paper pattern pieces and I sewed it up completely in 20 minutes!
I sincerely wish I had come up with this idea.
It turns out the fabulous maker is Carolyn Beam Creative Editor of Quiltmaker.
I have included the pattern link in case you'd like to make one before Halloween too!

#2

I had thought about blogging this on Friday. Call it 'finishing Friday'...but I never get any projects done Monday thru Thursday....so that just didn't seem right. I decided Monday blogging this is fine enough after a productive weekend.
It's another ______ bag. As I am writing this post. I still can't remember the name of the pattern. I know, I know, you all helped me out...even with a link. I still can't remember it. I am going to look now.
In the mean time, I just wanted to say that I started this bag and bag #1 over 2 years ago. They were supposed to be presents for friends for Christmas.  A comment triggered that memory.
I ended up scrapping the idea and making potato bags instead.
I have 2 purses now...I think they can be Christmas presents this year!
Oh right, the bag's name......
okay off for morning coffee. I need it.

31

I have always loved Halloween. It's my favorite holiday. I think that's because my birthday is very near Halloween and so I have many happy memories of it.
I made this Oct.31 stitchery {Buttermilk Basin} at the same time as the pillow stitcheries I blogged here.
I decided to make this one a mini wallhanging. I have really decorated for Halloween yet. I have slowly been bringing things out but I am far from done.
How about you? decorated for fall or Halloween yet?

Another finished WIP

I started Nifty Notes by This and That, several months ago.
I had some scraps and charms left of Neptune by Tula Pink.

My mother in law was looking through my bins of WIPs and scraps and things. She pulled this out and in a way challenged me to finish it.
I finished it that night.
Now I am on a mission to finish a few other small WIPs.
I guess I just needed a 'kick in the pants'.
I am hoping to accomplish a lot this coming weekend as the next weekend I am going out of town again.
It's that time of year for me. Not one but two dental meetings within a few weeks.
Drat! I might have to decrease my sewing time {or not}
Talk to you soon,

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

You know it's been a WIP too long when.....

You can't remember the magazine it was featured in.....

Or the name of the pattern.

but I finished it.
I had sewn the entire purse but didn't finish the handles.
I can't find the magazine.
Anyone know the name of the pattern? I think it may have been in Quilts n More.
I have a horrible memory these days.

Simple Abundance

I have been extremely fortunate to have another one of my table runner designs to appear in Quiltmaker magazine! Simple Abundance is in the September/October 2010 Quiltmaker.  It's made from a jelly roll or charm pack and it's super simple.

I had nearly forgotten to blog about it when I realized that a fellow blogger Carol had already pieced the runner top!
Friday, when I got home from a trip to Columbus I found a box from Colorado waiting for me.
It was sent from Papercraft. I was totally confused. Turns out it was my Simple Abundance table runner finally coming back home to me. In addition to the runner, there was a PaperCraft magazine included. To my surprise, the table runner was pictured in this magazine too!

Simple Abundance was made with Basic Grey's Origins fabric line. Basic Grey designs scrapbooking papers and other graphic art. It is only natural then to combine the 2!
In my own investigating I realized that Quiltmaker has a kit available AND a kit for the framed piece that it featured with the runner. I might just have to get that in order to match my runner!!!!
It's kind of cool that they incorporated paper love with fabric love.
******
Here's Origin version of Simple Abundance in my dining room....

And for inquiring minds, this is the original runner made with Verna by Kate Spain for Moda.

So if you are looking for a super simple runner that can be made from a charm pack or jellyroll, this is for you! It would a great way to use stash too...
Okay lunch break is over...
talk to you soon,

Boo. sunday stash

Added to my stash. I am not sure what this will become...hence the stash addition.
Perhaps a candy corn table runner or wonky pumpkin runner of some sort...like Pleasant Home Jody made last year?
maybe :0
 only time will tell.

Here are a few of your creations.

I just wanted to share.  It really warms my heart to see other quilters and crafters making the projects I designed! So today will be a little blog tour. If you would like to see what else these creative gals are making be sure to click on their blog links :)
I am off to West Virginia today (back tomorrow) so I may be scarce answering emails or comments ( I am mostly bad at that anyway).

First up is Carol of Carol's Craft Blog has had busy hands creating this beautiful table runner.
Sprinkle of Sunshine found in Quiltmaker magazine.
Notice that she added ruffle to her runner.

But she ALSO made Simple Abundance from the September/October Quiltmaker....
Somehow I think I forgot to mention that I had another project in Quiltmaker.

If I can make pictures I will show you the original, the one a made for the magazine and another fun thing that happened.  I just have too much to blog and not enough time.

Next up is Country Wishes

MBS Table Runner2

Country Wishes made Skinny Verna above in Wee Wonderland by Moda  from Moda Bakeshop.

Unfortunately I have this picture of a completed Skinny and can't find the maker. If you recognize this pic please let me know so that I can give proper credit!

And Marge made a skinny too!

And Mad About Patchworks did a Christmas version with Riley Blake fabrics.
They are all so awesome.
I can't wait to see finished Hello Yellow and Geese in Flight quilts and more Simple Abundance runners.
If you have a picture of a project that you made with one of my tutorials please add it to my flickr group! I would like to show these fun finishes on my blog regularly.
Okay off to pack for WV.
